Cornelius Demps is an associate attorney with Smoak, Chistolini & Barnett, in Tampa practicing in appellate, commercial litigation and insurance defense matters. The Fort Pierce native earned his bachelor’s degree from the Florida State University and his juris doctorate from Stetson University College of Law. While attending Stetson, Mr. Demps interned at the United States Attorney’s Office in Tampa and earned his certification in the Concentration in Advocacy Program. As a member of the Stetson trial team, Mr. Demps earned several best advocate awards at competitions throughout the country including Portland, Oregon; Kansas City; New Orleans; and Orlando. Upon graduation, the university bestowed upon him the Victor O. Wehle Award for Excellence in Trial Advocacy and he was inducted into the National Order of the Barristers.
Mr. Demps began his career as an Assistant State Attorney for the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Florida in New Port Richey. As a prosecutor in the West Pasco division, he conducted numerous trials involving serious felonies including Murder, Drug Trafficking, Sexual Battery, and Home Invasion Robbery. Mr. Demps was also appointed as special prosecutor on a case involving a Pasco Sheriff’s Office deputy charged with video voyeurism., Mr. Demps secured the conviction of the former deputy after a jury found him guilty as charged.
Following his time as trial prosecutor, he would go on to serve as an appellate prosecutor with the Florida Office of the Attorney General. As an Assistant Attorney General, Mr. Demps argued cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, the United States District Court for the Middle District, and the Second District Court of Appeal. Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Demps was named to Florida Trend Magazine’s Top Attorneys in Government Practice.
Mr. Demps is a Cass IV graduate of Florida Bar Wm. Reece Smith, Jr. Leadership Academy. He also serves on the executive board for the George Edgecombe Bar Association (“GEBA”), in Tampa and was named GEBA’s 2018 Outstanding Young Lawyer’s Award winner. He is also a member of the Hillsborough County Bar Association and serves on the Diversity Committee. He has earned a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent rating and was recently nominated by the Tampa Bay Business Journal as an Up & Comer in the local business community. He is licensed to practice in all Florida state and federal courts.
